101+ Inspirational Mountain Quotes and Mountain Captions for 2020

I’ve put together this list of mountain quotes to inspire you to take your next adventure.

quotes about mountains

I used to be a beach person and even wrote a post on beach quotes which you can check out but living in New Zealand I have the best of beaches and the best of mountains.

And of course this list starts off with the famous kiwi who scaled Mt Everest – Sir Edmond Hilary’s Climb the mountains quotes.  (Isn’t it crazy what’s happening on Everest now with all those people waiting to summit and dying there while waiting.  What would Edmond Hilary say to that.)

But don’t worry I have include John Muir Mountain quotes and other famous mountain quotes in the list including my favorite Dr Suess Quote.  I love how John Muir wrote so much about the Mountains in California.  I really cannot wait to do a rode trip there soon and especially visit Yosemite where a lot of his inspiration comes from for his mountain quotes.

Climb the mountain quotes – hiking quotes by Sir Edmond Hilary

Sir Edmond Hilary is a New Zealand icon and for good reason.  I really enjoyed putting together this list of his most famous quotes.

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919 – 2008) was an explorer and mountain climber. Together with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, he was the first to climb to the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. He was 88 when he passed away in 2008.

climbing mountain quotes

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” — Sir Edmund Hillary

“I think I mainly climb mountains because I get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. I never attempt to analyze these things too thoroughly, but I think that all mountaineers do get a great deal of satisfaction out of overcoming some challenge which they think is very difficult for them, or which perhaps may be a little dangerous.” – Edmund Hillary

”Human life is far more important than just getting to the top of a mountain.” – Edmund Hillary

“Life’s a bit like mountaineering – never look down.” – Edmund Hillary

It showed me that even though I was standing on top of the world, it wasn’t the end of everything. I was still looking beyond to other interesting challenges.” – Edmund Hillary

“If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go.” –Edmund Hillary
